Aluminium vs. UPVC Windows: Which Is Right for Your Kerala Home?

Once you've settled on glass, the frame is the other half of the decision — and in Kerala's climate, it's not a small one. Heat, humidity, salt air near the coast, and a real monsoon all put frames to the test. Here's how aluminium and UPVC compare.

Strength and slim profiles

Aluminium is stronger relative to its thickness, which means aluminium frames can be made slimmer while still holding larger panes of glass — useful for big windows, sliding doors and shopfronts where you want more glass and less frame visible. UPVC frames are generally bulkier for the same strength.

Heat and weather performance

UPVC is a poorer conductor of heat than aluminium, so it tends to keep interiors marginally cooler and reduces condensation — a genuine advantage in air-conditioned rooms. Uncoated aluminium can transfer more outside heat inward, though thermally-broken aluminium profiles (with an insulating barrier built into the frame) close most of that gap, at extra cost.

Monsoon and moisture

Both materials handle Kerala's rain and humidity well when installed correctly — neither rots, warps, or absorbs water the way wood does. Aluminium with a good powder-coat finish resists corrosion well, including in coastal air; UPVC doesn't corrode at all since it's a plastic, but can discolor slightly with years of strong UV exposure unless it's a UV-stabilized grade.

Maintenance

UPVC needs almost nothing beyond an occasional wipe-down. Aluminium is also low-maintenance, but a powder-coated finish will eventually benefit from repainting after many years of sun exposure, especially in south-facing installations.

Cost and lifespan

Aluminium generally costs more upfront but often works out durable for decades, and it's fully recyclable. UPVC tends to be more budget-friendly initially, with a typical lifespan still measured in decades, though color and finish options are more limited than aluminium's.

Our take

For larger openings, sliding doors, and anywhere a slim, modern profile matters, we lean aluminium. For standard home windows where budget and insulation matter more than a slim sightline, UPVC is a solid, low-maintenance choice. Either way, correct installation and sealing matters more than the material — a well-fitted window in either material will outperform a poorly-fitted one in the "better" material.
